Warzone 2026 Will Introduce a Blackout-Inspired Mode

One of the biggest announcements from Call of Duty: Next was confirmation that Warzone is set to receive a new mode in Spring 2026 directly inspired by Blackout, the franchise’s first battle royale experience.

For longtime fans, this is big news. Blackout originally debuted in Black Ops 4 (2018), bringing unique twists to the battle royale formula with zombies roaming certain areas, grappling hook traversal, and a heavier focus on ground loot. It was Call of Duty’s first step into the genre before Warzone became the global hit it is today.

Now, Treyarch and its partner studios are working to bring those roots back into the spotlight.

🕹️ What We Know About Warzone’s Blackout-Inspired Mode

So far, Activision has confirmed only a few details:

  • The new experience will launch in Spring 2026.

  • It will take place on a new map called Avalon.

  • The gameplay is described as a “bold new experience inspired by the original Blackout.”

Miles Leslie, Associate Creative Director at Treyarch and one of the key developers behind the original Blackout, says he’s “really excited” about what’s coming but can’t share all the details yet. What he did emphasize is how closely Treyarch is working with Raven, High Moon, and Beenox, the teams that drive Warzone content.

“It’s really not like we’re seeing it from afar,” Leslie explained. “We’re working hand-in-hand, crafting something that feels like Black Ops is coming to Warzone.”

⚙️ Gameplay Integration With Black Ops 7

This upcoming mode isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s also about consistency. Warzone is adopting several mechanics from Black Ops 7 to create seamless integration between the two titles:

  • Five-attachment limit on weapons.

  • Wildcards removed entirely.

  • Tactical Sprint disabled by default, requiring the Sprinter perk to unlock.

  • Improved ground loot quality, echoing Blackout’s emphasis on scavenging instead of loadouts.

These changes suggest a shift toward gameplay that rewards adaptability and quick decision-making—just like in Blackout.

👥 Why Fans Are Hyped

Part of the excitement stems from Treyarch’s passion for Blackout. Lawrence Metten, Associate Director of Design at Treyarch, admitted he wasn’t on the original Blackout dev team but played it extensively as a fan.

“You can tell there’s a lot of love within Treyarch for Blackout and what it represented,” Metten said. “We’re excited to show more when the time is right with that new mode.”

With both veteran developers who built the original and fresh designers who grew up playing it, Treyarch is blending experience and new ideas to reimagine Blackout for a new generation of Warzone players.

✅ Final Thoughts

The return of a Blackout-inspired experience in Warzone could be one of the franchise’s most exciting updates yet. By merging Black Ops 7’s mechanics with Warzone’s scale and polish, Treyarch and Raven are setting the stage for a fresh take on Call of Duty’s battle royale legacy.

We’ll have to wait until Spring 2026 for the full reveal, but one thing is clear: Black Ops fans are about to feel right at home in Warzone once again.
